I don’t even know where to begin when talking about our recent trip to Utah to photograph Cody & Hannah Gottman saying I DO. When Hannah first booked me to shoot their wedding it was supposed to be at our hometown of Carmi, IL & so many details had been planned. The more they thought about what they really wanted for their day, Carmi just didn’t seem right. They are adventurers at heart & they wanted to share this with their closest family and friends. There were almost 25 people who traveled across the states just to witness these two make incredible vows to one another. My husband & I were just blessed enough to have been asked to still please come & shoot the wedding. (literally I probably screamed YES when she asked as it has been my dream to shoot a wedding in Utah.)
So the day finally arrived & we were set to meet early of the morning & be ready to hike for a sunrise on the Canyon Overlook Trail in Zion National Park. (Because there are strict rules with getting married in the park Cody & Hannah chose to do their 1st look there instead) So we woke up & started to head to our meeting location. (Our rental car actually broke down on the way & thats a story for another time…) We finally met up, or they found us broke down on the side of the road…call it what you want. Haha. We hiked up & still made it to the top just in time. They each took their clothing & changed once we hiked most of the way up. Then the first look just speaks for itself in the photos…he was smitten with her. She was overjoyed and we were just lucky enough to witness it all unfold.
Later that afternoon everyone gathered together once again to start the cocktail hour which was held BEFORE the wedding! Yet another tradition that they threw out the window. I loved that they marched to the beat of their own drum. Hannah got ready for the ceremony & wore a different gown so she would only have to slip into her wedding gown & still surprise her guests. The cocktail hour had the most amazing charcuterie board that we later found out would also be brought to the reception as well. (HEAVEN)
Of course the ceremony site was breathtaking…I mean why wouldn’t it be with everything else we had seen throughout this day?! As we were brought up this large hill everyone had a seat & waited for Hannah to make her long awaited walk down the aisle. Everyone was excited & you can even see her mother holding her hands over her mouth as she is in such awe of her daughter. One of my favorite parts of their ceremony was how thoughtful the couple was to write letters to each of their guests & deliver them to each one during the ceremony. Everyone was in shock and so touched. I am pretty positive there wasn’t a dry eye anywhere to be seen. Hannah & Cody then proceeded to say the most sincere vows to one another that they had previously written. They were so intimate & touching! After exchanging the rings (which the groom made himself!) the couple read a Cherokee Prayer before their first kiss as husband & wife. If I could make every wedding as emotional & exciting as this one I would do it for the rest of my life.
